Water Damage

What to Do First After Water Damage

A clear first-response checklist for water damage, from immediate safety and stopping the source to documentation and structural drying.

What to Do First After Water Damage

After water damage, begin with safety. Stay away from standing water near electrical outlets, appliances, or a damaged ceiling. If the source can be stopped safely, shut it off. For a plumbing loss, that may mean using a fixture valve or the property’s main water shutoff. Do not enter an area affected by sewage or unknown contaminated water.

Once the immediate source is controlled, document visible damage and request help. Water can move under flooring and behind walls, so surface drying alone may miss affected materials. Extraction, moisture checks, airflow, and dehumidification should be matched to the building and the amount of water involved.
